East Haven Beats Hand on Walk-Off Home Run as State Tournament Plods Along

A family trip to East Haven on Wednesday - Girls Softball - the CIAC State Tournament Class L 1st Round - Hand at East Haven.

This game was a gem, a classic by 2 evenly matched teams. They got this game in because the game was changed from 4:00pm to 2:30pm. Many games changed their times and it was a very smart move. In fact, the schools might want to consider doing it again on Thursday.

But I digress. East Haven took a 2-0 lead after 3, but Hand tied it in the 4th on a 2 run Home Run by Brooke Salutari. It stayed that way until the 6th when Hand's Caroline O'Connor smacked a Home Run to give Hand a 3-2 lead.

It was time for the dramatics. In the bottom of the 7th, Tori Heaphy led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Sam Franceschi. Up stepped Rebecca Flynn.

After taking 2 pitches out of the Strike Zone, Flynn took the next pitch and hit a monstrous walk-off 2 run Home Run. East Haven won it 4-3.

Tori Heaphy was the winning pitcher. She allowed 4 hits and had 13 strikeouts. She also had 3 hits herself.

Rebecca Flynn also had 2 doubles to go along with her game winning Home Run.

East Haven will play at St. Joseph in the next Round.

Teams still in the Girls Softball Tournament: Cheshire, Shelton, Amity, West Haven, Lyman Hall, Foran, North Haven, Sacred Heart Academy, Jonathan Law, Seymour, Lauralton Hall, Derby, Coginchaug, Holy Cross, St. Paul, Hale-Ray

Teams still in the Baseball Tournament: Cheshire, Shelton, Wilbur Cross, Amity, Foran, Hand, Guilford, Notre Dame(WH), Jonathan Law, Oxford, ND(Ffld)

So the Tournament plods along. I will be at a game on Thursday - could be Softball or Baseball - ah decisions - tough to make -

Maybe I'll let Willy help me make the choice!
