Late Police officer honored as 'True Westie'

Wednesday night before West Haven's game against Amity, the community packed the Edward L. Bennett Rink to honor a 'True Westie' the late New Haven Officer Robert Fumiatti. Officer Fumiatti was a graduate of West Haven High's class of 1989. He was also an assistant Captain on the 1988 State Championship  Hockey team. He would later join the New Haven police force where in 2002 we has shot in the face in the line of duty.  After a miraculous recovery he would go on be a K-9 handler.

Although he died due to complications from his injury, he was remembered as the heart of a hockey team, a mentor in and out of the rink, and 'True Westie' in every sense of the term.

With his family present, WHHS hockey retired his number 8 at "The Bennett" to honor his memory.

With ties to their team as well as an assistant coach, Amity also hung the #24 jersey as s sign solidarity and respect of the revered West Haven native.
