Three children were shot and injured on Saturday (June 13) at the John Cain Aquatic Center in Stuttgart, Arkansas, when gunfire broke out just before 5 p.m., according to the Stuttgart Police Department. Officers responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of shots fired near the public pool, and found one child with a gunshot wound to the chest. Two other children were also hurt and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Details about their injuries have not been released.
Police stated that a suspect was taken into custody within minutes of the incident, with help from the Arkansas County Sheriff's Office. All of those involved are juveniles, so authorities have not released any names or identifying information. The motive or circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been shared, and the investigation remains ongoing as officers continue to gather information.
The aquatic center has been closed "until further notice," according to a statement on its Facebook page. The Stuttgart Police Department expressed sympathy in a statement, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and every person affected by this tragic incident. We remain committed to thoroughly investigating this case and ensuring accountability for those responsible."
Stuttgart is a small town located about an hour southeast of Little Rock. As of now, police continue to investigate and have not provided more information about what led to the gunfire. The John Cain Aquatic Center will stay closed until authorities determine it is safe to reopen.
