Dutch Police Arrest Man Who Opened Fire On A Tram

Authorities in the Netherlands say they have taken a man into custody who allegedly opened fire on a tram in the city of Utrecht, leaving three people dead and five others injured. Officials released a photo of the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Gökmen Tanis, who is from Turkey.

“A lot is still unclear at this point, and local authorities are working hard to establish all the facts,” Counter-Terrorism Agency head Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said during a press conference.

Authorities initially said they could not rule out terrorism as a motive for the attack and raised the terror alert for the area to its highest level. Authorities now believe that Tanis may have been been targeting a family member and shot at people who rushed to her aid.

Tanis has had numerous run-ins with law enforcement, including charges of burglary, shoplifting, drink-driving and assaulting a police officer. He was recently due to appear in court to face rape charges.
