Trump Asks Justice Department To Look Into Banning Bump Stocks

President Trump said he is directing the Justice Department to take steps to prohibit gun modifications such as bump stocks, which can increase the fire rate of a semi-automatic weapon.

Speaking at an event at the White House, Trump said he instructed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to "clarify whether certain bump stock devices like the once used in Las Vegas are illegal under current law."

“That process began in December and just a few moments ago I signed a memorandum directing the Attorney General to propose regulations to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns”

The president said he expects to see the regulations finalized "very soon."

Bump stocks became part of the nationwide discussion on gun control after it was revealed the shooter who opened fire on a Las Vegas crowd used one to increase his rate of fire as he rained bullets down on the vulnerable crowd.

According to The Hill, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives put out a request for comment on whether the agency should regulate bump stocks in December. 36,000 people left comments on the topic.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that President Trump supports the ban of bump stocks and that he expects to see action taken on the issue soon.

My understanding is that review has been completed and movement will take place on that shortly. But the president, when it comes to that, is committed to ensuring those devices ... The president doesn't support the use of those accessories.
