Sexual Assault Reports by Military Members Increased in 2016

INJOOn Friday the Pentagon disclosed base-by-base data on sexual assault reports, which showed an increase in the number of sexual assaults reported at U.S. military installations worldwide from 2013 to 2016.

According to the report's estimation, last year less than a third of military members who experienced a sexual assault went on to report it.

32 percent of all assaults that occurred within the military in 2016's fiscal year report, which represented an improvement 2014's estimated average of 15 percent or fewer, according to the report.

The report found that the Army, which contains the largest number of the U.S. service members, had the most sexual assault reports, with 8,294 total across the four-year span.

The Navy reported 4,788 incidents, with the Air Force following with 3,876 and the Marine Corps last with 3,400.

According to the report, the most assault reports from major bases included Fort Hood in Texas with 199 reports, Naval Base in San Diego, California, with 187 reports, Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg in North Carolina with 146 reports.
