80's Pop Star From Duo Roxette Passes At 61

I remember the first time I saw the video for Roxette's breakthrough hit, "The Look." It doubled as the first time I was hearing the song, too. There was an odd Beatles/Abba thing happening as far as I was concerned, and I absolutely LOVED it. Maybe some Eurythmics sprinkled on top. After all, this was a duo here, male and female, sharing both vocals and guitar duty.

Marie Fredrikkson even had the Annie Lennox haircut but she held her own in the guitar department, many times offering up some of the tastiest licks. "The Look" would be a good example of that. From there, hit after hit came, from "Listen to Your Heart" to "It Must Have Been Love" to another fun, rocking, fave of mine, "Joyride." "It Must Have Been Love," interestingly, began as a Christmas single, before being tweaked and included in the Julia Roberts star-making hit, "Pretty Woman."

"You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years," her bandmate Per Gessle said. "Things will never be the same." The joyride, sadly, has ended...but the music lives on. RIP.
